THE ART OF RECEIVING IDEAS - Part 1

Where do ideas come from? Ideas can be for anything. It can be for your next painting, writing, business, or a new dish. I am a writer so I will be sharing this from a writer’s perspective, but this can be used by anyone who is looking for unique ideas to pop in their head. So the question is how to attract a unique idea to your brain. For that you need to understand yourself first because the path that leads to any brilliant idea starts with your thought process.

How do ideas form? Where do they come from? Ideas come from the kind of person you are at present. There are three kinds of people in this world.

  1. People who dwell in their past.
  2. People who moved on from their past and live in the present.
  3. People who live in the future. (Classic Day dreamers)

Now People dwelling in the past get their ideas from their life experiences. (Not to confuse with the characters of the story. We are only talking about the basic thread, which forms the concept of the story) These people usually attract ideas from their personal life (Love, heart break, success, failure, struggle etc) Or they attract ideas like biopics, WW1, WW2, Historic, epic, real incidents, past crimes etc.

People who have moved on from their past and living in the present find their ideas in their present experiences of life. They are living, reading, watching, and finding their ideas that are trend setting.

Then there are day dreamers. The people who are fascinated by the future. The people who are fascinated by “what if”. Stan lee, James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Robert Rodrigues, Christopher Nolan, Comic and Graphic book creators are some examples.

Now if the idea comes from where you are in your head, then surely it can be changed (If you want to change). But it needs practice. You need to train and habituate your brain to stop thinking about the past, if you want to think futuristic. Forgive yourself and your ex and start reading futuristic articles on the internet. If you really believe you want to write a quirky trend setting comedy, or a futuristic space battle inside a human brain, the only way is habituating and feeding your brain the same thing over and over again until suddenly out of the blue a brilliant futuristic idea pops out of your head while reading a research on neurological gene mutation.

We will dwell on this more next time.
